Artist of the Day
DANIEL CLOWES

Dan Clowe's comic Eightball has been called 'the greatest ongoing comic' by Entertainment Weekly, Matt Groening has often sited it as his favorite comic, his graphic novels are lauded by the best in the industry, and his film Ghost World is a work of genius. The kind of genius we'll soon see again, as he is adaping his short story Art School Confidential into a screenplay for Terry Zwigoff to again direct. More about him here. Check out the brilliantflash animation ad for David Boring here.

Dan Clowes is an incredible artist, and an incredible writer. His talents first stood out to me after watching Ghost World, I had an immediate connection to the type of story it was, the kind of characters, and situations were so funny and interesting to me. A long time had passed but when my girlfriend Michelle had gone to Mexico a few months ago I was suddenly very lonely and bored, so after work I stopped by the Chapters to pick up a book. I saw his book David Boring, which I had for a while thought looked interesting. I brought it home and ended up reading it in one sitting. Not getting up or putting it down till I was finished the entire thing, it was that good. And since then I've been buying his other trades that I can get my hands on, such as Like A Velvet Glove Cast in Iron, and his collections of shorts Caricature and 20th Century Eightball. They're great little cynical tales, full of witty dialogue and characters that we can easily see ourselves as being like, then at the same time wishing we weren't like. Things we think only we think or do it turns out... others do it too.
